We’ve moved beyond a moment in time where patient engagement solutions are a nice-to-have – today, they are essential if you want to enroll your study on time. With awareness of clinical trials at a new peak, patients are savvy and selective and want to understand the experience you are offering them.

A key consideration for many patents today is their time. When you have to convince people about using more of their time, you need to have a dynamic program to do so.

In rare disease studies, it’s less about patients choosing one clinical trial over another and more about participation. We’ve seen first-hand the impact travel can have on these types of studies. It’s a selling point to patients as they don’t have to get bogged down managing travel arrangements on their own. It’s about offering solutions that make participation feel easier. This requires not only thought about the type of engagement program you want to offer, but thought about how you want to explain to patients that these programs exist.

Each patient has to feel like the program is customized for them. You need to have several options – basically a hybrid approach that offers patients flexibility and choice about how they participate. For instance, offering in-person visits vs. at-home visits when appropriate, etc.

However, if you are conducting a study for a more common condition – such as diabetes – you have to make an effort to differentiate your study from the many others out there. Our blueprint helps study sponsors identify proven engagement solutions and how to incorporate them, not just from the perspective of enhancing the patient experience, but from a strategic perspective with the goal of enrolling on time and on budget.
